Energia eólica decola no Brasil

A reportagem “escrita” é melhor e eu reproduzo abaixo:

Wind power is taking the lead in Brazil’s energy sector with the South American giant seeking to nearly double its capacity from 341 megawatts this year.

Strong, consistent winds off Brazil’s northern coast are making the area the epicenter for the country’s fastest-growing energy sector.

After a halting start for wind power in recent years, installed capacity is expected to roughly double this year from 341 megawatts at the end of 2008, a trend illustrated by the towering turbines that are an increasingly common sight along the northeast’s beaches.

A major boost to the industry will come in November when the government will hold its first wind-power auction. It’s expected to bring up to 1,000 MW in new generating capacity per year for six to 10 years. Those numbers are dwarfed by the world’s big wind power players such as Germany, the United States, and Spain.

But industry executives speak breathlessly about Brazil’s potential of 140,000 MW, more than 10 times the capacity of the country’s giant Itaipu hydropower project, thanks to its 7,300-km (4,500-mile) long, blustery Atlantic coastline.

Armando Abreu, director of Braselco, a wind-energy consulting firm, said he believes Brazil’s wind power sector will explode if the government goes through with its plans — a continuous auction program of 1,000 megawatts a year.

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) DIRECTOR OF WIND-ENERGY CONSULTING FIRM BRASELCO, ARMANDO ABREU: “Brazil’s wind power potential — depending on the altitude levels, the heights of the towers (windmills) we are referring to — it is possible to reach 140 or 150 giga watts. These are huge numbers and if you ask me my personal opinion in terms of what capacity can be installed, I would say Brazil has all conditions to in the next 5 or 10 years, easily install windmills with 10 to 20 megawatts capacity.”
